'Tis the season -- if you're hunting for the best day to night work dresses so you can easily go from work to cocktail parties and more, these are our favorites.

collage of 3 day to night work dresses

It can be really, really tricky to find a great dress that is polished and sedate enough to wear to work, but then is interesting or elegant enough to also go to a cocktail party or holiday party after work. So let’s discuss — what are you looking for in day to night work dresses? Do you add additional details like a statement necklace or ring to make it feel more festive?

These are some of the most polished, elegant day to night work dresses that I love…

Stylish Day to Night Work Dresses

Marycrafts

navy dress with tie detail at waist

This dress is almost always under $50, and feels fancy because of the twist detail at the waist. It’s available in sizes 0-22, at Amazon, in a bunch of colors.

Karen Kane

black stretchy dress with V-neck and cascading ruffle-ish detail that begins at waist and goes down side of skirt

This Cascade dress has been a reader favorite for years because it’s so easy to wear — it’s stretchy, it’s flattering, it’s a little bit dramatic, and you can hand wash it. Score! It’s $118 full price at Nordstrom and other retailers, often available in sizes XS-3X as well as petites.

Adrianna Papell

burgundy fuchsia dress with three-quarter sleeves and tie waist detail at waist

Aw, I’m kind of excited to see this Adrianna Pappell dress back in stock — it was a reader favorite for years, and then it disappeared for a bit. But it’s a great dress for day to night looks.

It’s $129-$159 at Nordstrom and other retailers, available in regular and plus sizes.

M.M.LaFleur

black dress with wide neckline, dolman sleeves, and drapey detail at waist

I’ve always thought M.M.LaFleur’s Jillian dress was a gorgeous, elegant dress that would be just as appropriate in a conference room as well as at a cocktail party. It comes in a bunch of different colors, and a new “everyday satin” fabric, for $365 full price. (There are a lot marked down to $220 right now, though!)

Black Halo

dress with asymmetric detail at neckline

In general, Black Halo makes beautiful, stylish, super polished dresses — it’s hard to think of an item of theirs, over the years, that wouldn’t be appropriate for both day to night. The pictured dress, the Jackie, is their classic, and also comes in a jumpsuit form. It’s $375-$435 at Nordstrom and other retailers.

The Fold

hot pink dress with folded, draped detail at the top and an asymmetric diagonal(ish) line going down the front of the skirt, ending in a front slit

Man – we have featured so many drool-worthy dresses and blazers from The Fold over the years, it’s hard to say which is my favorite, but this hot pink dress may just be it. SO. FABULOUS. One of their iconic dresses, the Arlington, is also great for day-to-night looks.

The pictured dress is $595 at TheFold.com.

What are you looking for in a day to night dress, readers?

Pondering where to buy the best plus-size dresses for work? We've updated our picks!

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

Pondering where to buy the best plus-size dresses for work? We just rounded up the most stylish sheath dresses for work in regular sizes, and while we mentioned plus-size availability in that post, we thought a roundup of the best plus-size dresses for work deserved its own post. Below find a bunch of our favorite plus-size dresses for work, from basic sheath dresses in plus sizes, sleeved sheath dresses, plus-size petite dresses (so hard to find!), designer dresses in plus sizes, wrap dresses, dresses with pockets, machine-washable dresses… and more.

Readers, which are your favorite plus-size dresses for work? Which ones do you have in multiple colors? Which ones make you feel like a million dollars?

Above, some of our favorite plus-size wrap dresses: one / two / three / four / five (not pictured but also check out this Etsy seller)

red shift dress from Universal Standard

Universal Standard has a number of nice dresses for work.

Universal Standard, if you don’t know, does this great thing where they show you models wearing the dress in your size — so you can see a variety of models wearing sizes 6–3X. If you worry that your weight is in flux, they also have a great thing called “Fit Liberty,” which includes at least one of the dresses (although not the one pictured) — if your size changes within the year you can exchange the dress for your new size.

Other nice options for stylish sheath dresses for work in plus sizes include Eloquii, J.Crew, M.M.LaFleur, Lands’ End, and Calvin Klein.

woman wears plus-size work dress in wool

Lands’ End dresses have always been hits with the readers — pictured is their wool dress (actually from their uniform section, but it’s too perfect not to include) and their ponte dresses. They also shine with wrap dresses!

For simple basics, also check Of Mercer, Universal Standard (up to 40), and Gravitas (up to 3X).

purple sheath dress with asymmetrical neckline from Amazon seller Muxxn

There used to be a Facebook group for lawyer moms (it’s currently archived, alas), but a lottttt of women were singing the praises of this dress from MUXXN for work, and on Amazon it has 13,500 great reviews. For my $.02, I’d recommend sizing up — but I love that it comes in a zillion colors, is only $30, and comes in sizes S–3X. (It’s important to note that the fabric is a bit more like a polyester T-shirt than a thick ponte — but I love looking at all the real women sharing pictures of themselves in the dress.)

If you’re hunting for other colorful sheath dresses for work, some other great options right now include Calvin Klein, CeCe, and Boden (up to 22).

vintage-looking green dress for work on mannequin from Etsy seller heartmycoset

Bespoke, custom dresses are another way to go — and we’ve featured a lot of great Etsy sellers over the years who are surprisingly affordable. Etsy seller “heartmycloset” makes dresses inspired by the royals (Meghan, Kate) and TV shows like Suits, Agent Carter, and House of Cards — she has a zillion colors to choose from, and for the most part the dresses are under $150. Sign me up! (If you know of more Etsy sellers we’d love to hear about them!)

Other spots to check for custom dresses include eShakti as well as Igigi.

If you like the vintage vibes of heartmycloset, check out Amazon seller Marycrafts (available up to size 22), as well as ModCloth (but note that it can be hit or miss in terms of wear-to-work pieces).

plus-size dress for work in geometric print from designer Diane von Furstenberg

The iconic DvF wrap dress is currently available in a ton of prints, in plus sizes, at Dia & Co. (formerly 11 Honoré). While it’s not a classic sheath, it’s still a great dress for work. If you’re uncomfortable with the amount of cleavage, I’d recommend either a full slip, or possibly a demi camisole if you want to wear it with another high-waisted foundation garment like Spanx shorts (for compression) or Jockey slip-shorts (for anti-chafing and comfort).

Some other great options for splurges (dresses over $200) include brands and shops like Vince, Nic + Zoe, Lafayette 148 New York, and Navabi — but see our full roundup of designer plus-size clothing for professional women for more ideas.

Some of our other favorite wrap dresses that come in plus sizes include Kiyonna, Lands’ End, Karen Kane, ASOS, and Universal Standard.

We're going on a hunt for comfortable heels for wide feet -- readers, if you need wider widths, what are your favorite shoe brands for work?

Which are the most professional, comfortable heels for wide feet? Reader N wonders:

I always have trouble finding a pair of comfortable but fashionable shoes, for two reasons – 1) I have wide feet and can only buy wide sized shoes, of which there is limited selection, and 2) I also have flat feet/collapsed arches. Could you suggest some brands that have nice shoes in wide sizes (especially ones that are available in Canada?) and which are also comfortable and affordable? And any other tips on shoe inserts, perhaps? Thanks!

We’ve talked about how to find shoes for your weird feet, as well as the best general shoe brands (and tips) for buying comfortable heels, but we haven’t talked about professional shoes for wide feet for a few years now. (I would recommend treating flat feet/wide feet as two different issues, but your podiatrist can advise you best there — we’ve talked before about women’s shoe inserts to make heels more comfortable.)

(These gold heels are really similar to the ones pictured in the stock photo at top!)

The Hunt: The Best Boyfriend Blazers for Work https://corporette.com/the-best-boyfriend-blazers-for-work/ https://corporette.com/the-best-boyfriend-blazers-for-work/#comments Tue, 14 Jun 2022 17:51:37 +0000 https://corporette.com/?p=132234

Readers, what are your favorite boyfriend blazers of the moment? Are you seeing them both at your office and on the brunch circuit? We rounded up our favorites (and how to wear them).

collage of four women wearing boyfriend blazers featured below

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

It has been ages since we’ve done a roundup of boyfriend blazers — primarily because it’s been ages since they’ve been in. But it’s one of the must-have trendy pieces of the summer, and so it’s a great piece for both work and play.

The usual way I’m seeing it is worn casually — typically pleated shorts, tiny and/or cropped tank, and a boyfriend blazer. That probably won’t work for most workplaces, but you can adapt it easily — for example, it can become an easy topper for a sheath dress (or even a work-appropriate tank- or t-shirt dress, like this).

Another easy work look with a boyfriend blazer is as a topper for the “column of color” — wear a close-fitting top like a bodysuit or fitted layering tee with pants in a matching shade, and then add the boyfriend blazer on top.

Readers, what are your favorite boyfriend blazers of the moment? Are you seeing them both at your office and on the brunch circuit?

The Best Boyfriend Blazers for Work: Specific Styles

Amazon / The Drop

woman wears a white boyfriend blazer, white silky camisole, and blue jeans

This first option is $69, and available in sizes XS-5X — and it comes in 6 colors! The all-white-on-top look, as styled here, is another great way to wear this to work. It’s from Amazon’s line, The Drop. If you’re looking for more colors at this price point, this blazer from Amazon is $48, has 27 colors (!) and has a lot of promising buyer-submitted pictures — but it only goes up to size XXL.

Open Edit

woman wears a raspberry pink boyfriend blazer, black trousers and a black bralette

Another great affordable option: this oversized blazer from Open Edit, which comes in a number of colors and fabrics, some with matching bottoms. I love this happy pink. The blazers are around $47-$79, and available in XXS-3X.

Madewell

woman hunches on a chair with one leg up; she wears a peachy windowpane boyfriend blazer with blue jeans

Madewell has 7 colors of this breezy blazer, and it’s mostly on sale — it’s regularly $148, but lots of colors and sizes are marked to $119-$125, plus an extra 30% off with code. Nice! It comes in sizes XXS-4X — I think this peachy windowpane is my favorite of the lot.

Everlane

model wears orangey peach boyfriend blazer with flared white shorts and a cropped white tank

Everlane has a fun “80s blazer,” which comes five colors (including a plaid!). If you want to see a boyfriend blazer styled with bike shorts (!), click here — definitely not for work (IMHO) but if you can make it work in your free time, go for it. The blazer is $180, available in sizes 00-16.

(Also in this price range — and with petite options — is Express, which has a number of boyfriend blazers.)

Favorite Daughter

woman wears black gingham blazer with sleeves rolled up, white crop top and blue jeans

Favorite Daughter is a new brand to me, but they have a bunch of fun blazers at both Anthropologie and Nordstrom. The pictured blazer is $298, and available in sizes XS-XL, at Anthro; Nordstrom has the plaid in two other colors (and they show it over a matching gingham minidress, so NOW you can sing Cake).

Also in this price range: Michael Kors has a bunch of fun boyfriend blazers ($295-$325).

Peter Do

model wears beige boyfriend blazer, black top with a deep V, and white trousers that turn into mesh mid-thigh (no, we don't get it either)

There are a ton of designer options to pick from — including the Rag & Bone blazer that Elizabeth picked for Monday! I think my favorite is this Peter Do blazer, because the styling illustrates another great way to wear it to work, with mixed neutrals and voluminous trousers on the bottom. (I might skip the weird mesh pants, though.) The pictured blazer is $2300 at Neiman Marcus.

Interestingly, some of the higher end blazers are extremely oversized — kind of veering into Talking Heads territory — such as those from Balenciaga, The Row, and Low Classic. Would you ever wear these to work?

Group of plus size women

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

A ton of our Plus-Size Hall of Fame items are blouses, but I don’t think we’ve done a roundup — so here is a quick rundown of the best plus-size workwear blouses!

In the past we’ve talked about important issues such as how to keep white blouses white, some DIY options for gaping blouses, when to tuck your blouse, whether the collar goes out or in, what color camisole to wear beneath a white blouse, and 10 things to know about wearing button-front blouses. We’ve also rounded up the best blouses for women with large breasts, if this is your issue!

Some of the Hall of Famers we’ve noted over the years include:

Image of 5 plus-size women wearing 1) a crisp popover blouse with collar 2) a crisp button-front blouse with 3/4 sleeves 3) a silky button-front dress with a notched V-neck but no collar, 4) a silky popover blouse with a V-neck, and 5) a crisp popover blouse with a collar

Best Plus-Size Tees for Work

These are great layering pieces if you’re having a more casual day…

Best Sleeveless Shells

These are some of our favorite sleeveless work tops in plus sizes: black / blue / white / pink — also check out this collared top and this camisole (but know your office before wearing without a blazer or sweater)!

A Closer Look at some of Our Favorite Plus-Size Blouses

While we’ve pictured some of our favorite washable jersey tees above (and a great layering option for a more casual day!), “the blousy tee” is always a nice option for less casual days. It’s a bit silkier/fancier than a jersey T-shirt but without the gaping/ironing problems of a collared shirt. The Lands’ End one above comes in a zillion colors; this similar style is great. (Lands’ End in general is a great brand for this kind of style.)

Other brands to keep an eye on for these elevated T-shirt blouses include  Vince CamutoHalogenTalbots, Boden (up to 20/22) and Ravella (up to 20/22). (ModCloth and Old Navy also have some good options sometimes!)

The NYDJ popover blouse has been a reader favorite and bestseller for a zillion years now — it’s machine washable and comes in a zillion colors and sizes at Nordstrom and Amazon. It can be a little bit on the more casual side, but it’s a great option to wear by itself.

Vince Camuto makes some similar items — their rumple satin option is particularly popular.

If you’re looking for a crisp, collared blouse for women in plus sizes, Universal Standard’s Elbe blouse is a nice option that’s been around for years now, available in sizes 00–40. I particularly like that it’s essentially a popover — the placket only goes halfway down, which means you don’t need to worry about gaping buttons on your tummy.

Some other nice options for plus-size collared shirts for women include non-iron options like Foxcroft, Ralph Lauren, Talbots, and Lands’ End.

If you want a sleek, tucked-in look (GREAT with voluminous pants or a flared skirt), bodysuits are back in style and can be a really sophisticated option.

They tend to be on the trendier side, so specific items will come and go, but good spots to check include Eloquii (pictured above), as well as J.Crew Factory,  MadewellASOS, and Venus. (You may also want to check out our whole post on the best bodysuits for work outfits.)

We just did a roundup of the best women’s T-shirts for layering at the office, and while we always include a plus-size section, I thought I’d do a separate post to discuss some of our favorite options, as well as to round up some unique categories just for plus sizes, including the best basic tees in extended sizes (up to 6X!), the best eco-friendly plus size tees, and more.

As I noted in the other post, a good basic tee for work should be opaque, not too low cut, and have sleeves. (Know your office — sleeveless looks aren’t acceptable everywhere!) I’ve always been a fan of tees that are thick enough so bra details are still a mystery.

I would say that a “weekend tee” would have more casual details, such as pockets and shirttails.

If you’re looking for more affordable options, Amazon Essentials is getting rave reviews — AND they’re available up to size 6X, which can be tough to find. The pictured one is $15.

Other affordable options include L.L. Bean, Lands’ End, Eddie Bauer, and Kohl’s.

If you’re looking for extended sizes, in addition to Amazon Essentials, don’t forget about Universal Standard (to 4XL), J.Jill (to 4X), Kohl’s (to 5X), and Girlfriend Collective (up to 6X) — all offer nice, basic tees for work outfits.

Universal Standard is a fabulous basic for layering underneath a blazer, cardigan, or sweater blazer — the fabric is soft but substantial and it drapes well. Some of their tees are even part of US’s Fit Liberty program, which will allow you to exchange sizes up to a year after you’ve worn the shirt.

This Lauren Ralph Lauren top has been around for years and is another great basic — the wide boatneck is flattering by itself or layered beneath blazers or cardigans. Macy’s has them in plus sizes for $30.

Talbots is always a great basic for professional clothes in plus sizes — they also have the hard to find “plus petite” category, although fortunately that matters less with T-shirts.

Lands’ End also has a plus petite category.

Eileen Fisher can be pricey as far as plus-size tees for work go, but they’re a fabulous company for sustainability, and most of their clothes are made in the U.S. with sustainable fibers. The most options are of course on the brand’s website, but if you prefer the return policy at Nordstrom there’s also a huge selection there.

EF also has an interesting “renew” policy in that they’ll take back old EF clothes, even if they’re worn or damaged. You get a $5 gift certificate and they repurpose the fabric into other creations.

Eco-friendly plus-size clothes can be hard to find, but Eileen Fisher, Ulla Popken, Hours, prAna, and Girlfriend Collective all offer eco-friendly, basic tees for work.

Vince is a new brand to me as far as plus-size tees go — I didn’t realize they’d started making basics! If you’re looking to upgrade your work tees, these start at $80, so they’re a bit of an investment.
